What’s next for dog access at South Hobart Oval?
Despite Council’s decision on dog access at South Hobart Oval, Louise Bloomfield remains committed to standing with residents and finding a practical solution for the local community.
Last night, my motion to reconsider dog access at South Hobart Oval was not supported by enough elected members.
I am deeply disappointed—but I remain proud to have stood with the South Hobart community.
The original decision to remove dog access was made alongside a proposed replacement off-lead area at Lower Wellesley Park. That replacement is no longer proceeding.
Without the promised alternative, I believed it was only fair that Council reconsider the ban and restore appropriate interim access until a suitable permanent space could be delivered.
Before the meeting, I spent the weekend door-knocking South Hobart and speaking directly with residents. Of around 200 households I approached, only two supported the permanent loss of dog access at the oval.
I also read every email sent to me, printed them and took them into the council chamber so the experiences and distress of residents could be properly represented.
Although the vote was lost, the community’s concerns have not disappeared—and neither has my commitment to finding a fair and practical solution.
Good consultation must mean more than listening politely and then proceeding regardless. It must mean allowing community evidence to shape the final decision.
